The terms that govern your use of StudyRise.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of StudyRise (the "Service"), a study planning and tracking web application available at https://studyrise.app. The Service is operated by the individual developer trading as "StudyRise" ("we", "us", "our"). StudyRise is currently operated as a personal project and not through a formal company entity; the operating entity may change in the future, and these Terms will continue to apply to the Service regardless of any such change.
Please read these Terms carefully. By creating an account, ticking the acceptance checkbox, or otherwise using the Service, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms and by our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not create an account and do not use the Service.
By accessing or using the Service you enter into a binding agreement with StudyRise. You accept these Terms when you do any of the following:
If you are using the Service on behalf of another person, organisation, or institution, you represent that you have authority to bind that party to these Terms, and "you" refers to that party.
StudyRise is an educational planning and tracking tool. It helps you organise a study plan across phases, schedule spaced-repetition reviews based on the Ebbinghaus forgetting curve, generate daily study schedules, log practice questions and mock exams, track mistakes, and view analytics about your progress. It also includes an optional AI Study Advisor and, for university users, term, unit, assessment, and grade-tracking features.
StudyRise is built for candidates preparing for high-stakes examinations — including the Australian Medical Council MCQ (AMC MCQ), the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board test (PLAB 1), the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK), and custom exams — as well as university students.
StudyRise is not:
You are solely responsible for verifying exam dates, eligibility requirements, registration deadlines, and content accuracy directly with the relevant official body. See Section 11 (Disclaimers) for more detail.
You must be at least 13 years old to create an account. By using the Service you confirm that you meet this requirement.
To use most features you must create an account. You agree to:
You may register with an email and password or through a supported third-party sign-in provider. We use Supabase for authentication; your credentials are handled as described in the Privacy Policy. We are not liable for any loss arising from your failure to safeguard your credentials.
You agree that you will not:
We may investigate and take appropriate action — including suspending or terminating accounts and reporting to authorities — for any violation.
The Service, including its software, design, branding, the "StudyRise" name and logo, the tagline "Plan today. Rise tomorrow.", and all associated content we create, is owned by StudyRise and is protected by intellectual-property laws. Except for the limited right to use the Service granted under these Terms, no rights are transferred to you. You may not use our branding without our prior written consent.
We grant you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the Service for your own personal, non-commercial study purposes, subject to these Terms.
You retain all ownership of the data and content you create or upload to the Service — including your study plans, subjects, tasks, daily study logs, mock exam scores, spaced-repetition records, mistake logs, notes, and any avatar image ("Your Content"). We do not claim ownership of Your Content.
You grant us a limited licence to host, store, process, and display Your Content solely for the purpose of operating and providing the Service to you (for example, to generate your schedule, compute analytics, or, where you use it, to produce AI Study Advisor suggestions). This licence ends when you delete Your Content or your account, except for backups retained for a limited period and records we are required to keep by law.
You are responsible for Your Content and for maintaining your own independent copies of anything important to you. We provide a data-export tool (Settings → Danger Zone / Import-Export) so you can download your data at any time.
The Service may be offered on a free and paid (subscription) basis. Paid subscriptions are not currently activated; while activation is off, all features are provided as a free preview. The terms below describe the subscription model that applies once paid subscriptions are activated.
The AI Study Advisor is an optional feature that sends a summarised view of your study data to a third-party AI provider (currently OpenAI) to generate personalised suggestions. Its output is AI-generated and may be inaccurate, incomplete, or unsuitable. It is a suggestion aid only and is not professional, medical, or examination advice. You are responsible for evaluating any suggestion before acting on it. See the Privacy Policy for what data is shared.
We aim to keep the Service available but do not guarantee uninterrupted, error-free, or secure access. We may update, modify, suspend, limit, or discontinue any feature of the Service at any time, with or without notice. We will make reasonable efforts to notify you of significant changes that materially reduce the functionality you rely on. We are not liable for any unavailability, delay, or data loss caused by factors outside our reasonable control.
To the maximum extent permitted by law:
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits any liability that cannot be excluded or limited under applicable law.
To the maximum extent permitted by law, StudyRise and its operator(s) will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, goodwill, study outcomes, or examination results, arising out of or related to your use of (or inability to use) the Service, whether based in contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or any other theory, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.
Where liability cannot be wholly excluded, our total aggregate liability to you arising out of or relating to the Service is limited to the greater of (a) the total amount you paid us for the Service in the 12 months before the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) USD 50 (or its equivalent).
Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions or limitations; in those jurisdictions our liability is limited to the smallest extent permitted by law.
You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless StudyRise and its operator(s) from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of or related to: (a) your use or misuse of the Service; (b) your violation of these Terms; (c) your violation of any law or the rights of a third party; or (d) Your Content.
We may revise these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the version number and effective date and, where the change is significant, prompt you to re-accept the updated Terms the next time you use the Service. Your continued use of the Service after the updated Terms take effect constitutes acceptance. If you do not accept the updated Terms, you must stop using the Service and may delete your account. A summary of changes is recorded in the Changelog at the end of this document.
